Catalan is a Romance language spoken by as many as 12 million people in specific parts of Spain, France, Andorra and Italy, although most Catalan speakers are in Spain. Catalan is the national and official language of Andorra, and a co-official language in the Spanish autonomous communities of the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and the Valencian Community, where it is known as Valencia (Valencian), and in the city of Alghero on Italy’s Sardinia. It is also spoken but not officially recognized in the autonomous communities of Aragon and Murcia (Spain) and officially recognized to some extent, in southern France’s historic Roussillon region. The Catalan language developed from Vulgar Latin on both sides of the eastern part of the Pyrenees mountains. It shares features with Gallo-Romance, Ibero-Romance, and the Gallo-Italian speech types of Northern Italy, and also shares numerous features with other Romance languages, with the degree of similarity commensurate with physical distance. Catalan is divided into Eastern and Western Catalan dialects, with deep differences in lexicon, grammar, morphology and pronunciation due to historical isolation. Catalan grammar and verb conjugation mostly follow the general pattern of Western Romance languages.
