German is a West Germanic language, related to English and Dutch, and uses the Latin alphabet. It is the most widespread mother tongue in the European Union and ranks 11th worldwide in terms of native speakers. It’s the official exclusive language of Germany, Austria, and Liechtenstein, and numbers among the official languages of Switzerland, Belgium, and Luxembourg, in addition to the Province of Bolzano-Bozen in Italy. There are over 105 million native speakers of German, primarily in Europe, and it’s spoken as a minority language in 40 countries. It is estimated that an additional 80 million people worldwide speak German. While German used to be the language of commerce and government in the Habsburg Empire that encompassed much of Central and Eastern Europe and, it was spoken by townspeople throughout most of the Empire until the mid-19th century. Today, it is an international language of business, scientific research, publishing and tourism.
