Hungarian is a Ugric language belonging to the Uralic languages and is unrelated to most other languages in Europe, with the most closely related languages being Mansi and Khanty in western Siberia. Hungarian is mainly spoken in Hungary and by Hungarian minorities inhabiting seven neighboring countries. There are about 14.5 million native speakers, of whom 9.5-10 million live in Hungary, where it is the official language. About 2 million speakers live outside of the country’s borders, in areas that were part of the Kingdom of Hungary before the Treaty of Trianon (1920). Most of these Hungarians (approximately 1.4 million) live in Romania, and may also be found in Slovakia, Serbia, Ukraine, Croatia, Austria, and Slovenia, in addition to about a million scattered elsewhere. Hungarian is also an official language of the European Union, one of the official languages of Vojvodina (Serbia), parts of Slovenia, and in Romania in all settlements with an ethnic Hungarian population of over 20%.
