Italian is a Romance language spoken by about 60 million people in Italy, and by a total of around 70 million worldwide, with significant Italian-speaking populations in 29 countries. It is an official language in Switzerland, San Marino, the Vatican City, Switzerland, Slovenia and Croatia. Standard Italian, which was adopted by the state after Italy’s unification, is based on Tuscan (namely on the dialects of Florence). While its development was also influenced by the other Italian dialects and by the Germanic language of the post-Roman Barbaric invaders, it has been, first and foremost, directly and heavily influenced by Latin. Italian is the closest modern language to Latin in terms of vocabulary and, unlike most other Romance languages, it has retained the contrast between short and long consonants that existed in Latin. It also retains the aspect that stress is distinctive, as with most other Romance languages.
