Moldovan (a.k.a. Moldavian) is essentially Romanian, written in the Latin script, since the language spoken in Moldova is identical to Romanian and shares the same literary standard; however, for political reasons, the language is called both Moldovan and Romanian inside the country in support of the Moldovan-Romanian linguistic identity, as quoted from the preamble of the country’s 1989 Language Law. Moldavian speech refers to the north-eastern variety of spoken Romanian, which is encountered within the territory of the former Principality of Moldavia (now Moldova and Romania). The Moldavian variety is one of five major spoken varieties of Romanian, all five of which are written identically. Previously, the historical Romanian Cyrillic alphabet was used until 1857, while the Moldovan Cyrillic alphabet was used in 1940-89. At present, the latter continues to be used in the breakaway territory of Transnistria.
