Romanian (a.k.a. Daco-Romanian) is a Romance language, belonging to the Italic branch of the Indo-European language family. It is most similar with other Eastern Romance languages spoken south of the Danube and then Italian, followed by other Western Romance languages as French, Portuguese, and Spanish. It is sometimes called Daco-Romanian in reference to the area where it is spoken (corresponding roughly to the Roman province of Dacia). It is spoken by 24-28 million people, primarily in Romania and Moldova. Romanian is the single official and national language in Romania and Moldova, and shares official status at the regional level in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina in Serbia and in the Moldovan autonomies of Gagauzia and Transnistria. Romanian minorities are encountered in Serbia, Ukraine, Hungary, and Bulgaria, with immigrant populations in Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Israel, Kazakhstan, Russia, the USA, Canada and Australia. Romanian speakers are scattered across many other countries, notably Italy, Spain, Russia, Ukraine, Israel, Portugal, United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, France, and Germany. Romanian speakers account for 0.5% of the world's population, and 4% of the Romance-speaking population of the world.
