Bulgarian is a Slavic language and belongs within this family to the South Slavic branch. In Bulgaria, about 7 million people speak Bulgarian as their mother tongue, and the large Turkish minority in Bulgaria speaks it as a second language and a language of education. Bulgarian minorities exist in many neighbouring countries and in Ukraine. In total, about 10 million people speak Bulgarian. It is also one of the official languages of the European Union. Next Macedonian is related to the Bulgarian language. Together they are referred to as the eastern group of South Slavic languages. This language group has been relatively far removed from the other Slavic languages in its grammatical form system and can therefore be seen as a special case in this language family. For example, Bulgarian has certain articles, but a very weak case system. It has many words from Turkish, and less from Greek. Bulgarian is written in Cyrillic.
