Catalan is a Romance language spoken by about 10 million people in specific parts of Spain, France, Andorra and Italy, although most Catalan speakers live in Spain. Catalan is the national and official language of Andorra, and a co-official language in the Spanish autonomous communities of Catalonia, the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands, and in the city of Alghero in Italy’s Sardinia. It is also spoken in the autonomous communities of Aragon and Murcia and in southern France’s historical Roussillon region. The Catalan language developed from Vulgar Latin on both sides of the eastern part of the Pyrenees mountains. It shares features with other Romance languages, with the degree of similarity commensurate with the real distance of the areas where the languages are spoken. Catalan is divided into Eastern and Western Catalan dialects, with deep differences in lexis, grammar, morphology and pronunciation due to historical isolation. Catalan grammar and verb conjugation mostly follow the general pattern of Western Romance languages. It uses Latin script and is most closely related to Occitan, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. Catalan has a long tradition as a literary language. For a long time, however, it was suppressed in fascist Spain and only then regained official status.
