Dutch is a West Germanic language that is closely related to other languages in this family (e.g. English, West Frisian and German) and somewhat more remotely to the North Germanic languages. Dutch is an official language of 5 countries, including the Netherlands, Netherlands Antilles, Suriname, Belgium and Aruba, as well as three unions – the EU, Benelux, and Union of South American Nations. Dutch is spoken by over 22 million people as a native language, 16 million of whom live in the Netherlands and 6 million in Flanders, Belgium. Over 5 million people know Dutch as a second language. Dutch is also the parent language of Afrikaans, one of the official languages of South Africa and the most widely understood in Namibia, and several creole languages. Dutch and Afrikaans are largely mutually intelligible, but with separate spelling standards, dictionaries and language regulators. The Dutch Language Union (Nederlandse Taalunie) coordinates actions of the Dutch, Flemish and Surinamese authorities in linguistic issues, language policy, language teaching and literature.
