Finnish belongs to the Finnish branch of the Finno-Ugric language family and is the official language in Finland. In addition, there are small Finnish minorities in Sweden and Norway and in the Republic of Karelia in Russia a Finnish variety is spoken. Finnish is also an official language of the European Union and one of the working languages of the Nordic Council. In total, around 5 million people speak Finnish as their native language. It is closest to Estonian, but not the other languages of the Scandinavian countries. Due to the fundamentally different grammar and vocabulary it is very difficult to learn. The Finnish language consistently differentiates between long and short vowels and consonants. Many words it has taken from Germanic languages and from Russian.
