Finnish is a member of the Baltic-Finnic subgroup of the Finno-Ugric language group, which belongs to the Uralic family of languages. The Baltic-Finnic subgroup also includes Estonian and other minority languages spoken around the Baltic Sea, with which Finnish shares similarities. The Finnish language is spoken by an estimated 6 million people as a first language, the majority of whom reside in Finland. As of 2006, 92% of the country’s population spoke Finnish as their first language. It is one of the two official languages in Finland, while it is an official minority language in Sweden, where both standard Finnish and Meänkieli, a Finnish dialect, are spoken. Even in Norway, the Kven language, which is also closely related to Finnish, is an official minority language. Finnish is also an official language of the European Union and one of the working languages of the Nordic Council.
