French is a Romance language, the official language in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Canada and many former French colonies, especially in Africa. Moreover, it is one of the most important languages of international life, the official and working languages of the European Union, the United Nations (UN) and many other international organizations. Around 65 million people speak French as their mother tongue, and as a language of education and languages, it is particularly widespread in Africa, so that the number of speakers can only be given very roughly and is around 200 million people. As a Romance language it comes from the Vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire, although the then native Celtic languages of Roman Gaul and the Germanic language have influenced the French. Over time, in many respects, it has evolved from all subsidiary languages furthest from Latin. Characteristic of French is the historical orthography, which captures a phonetic vocabulary from which today's language is far removed. There are many homonyms, ie words that are pronounced the same but are spelled differently. For many centuries French has been the leading language of education and politics in Europe, so there are countless French loanwords in almost every language in Europe.
