French is a Romance language that descended from Latin, but it was also influenced by the native Celtic languages of Roman Gaul and by the Germanic language of the post-Roman Frankish invaders. It is the mother tongue to more than 100 million people, spoken as a second language by 190 million, while an estimated 200 million people speak French as a foreign language. It has a significant number of speakers in 54 countries, with most native speakers in France, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Monaco, and Francophone Africa (where those speaking French as a second language outnumber those for whom French is a mother tongue). Until the mid-20th century, French was the foremost diplomatic language among European and colonial powers and the lingua franca in Europe among the educated classes in Europe. Today, French is the 7th most spoken language in the world, ranks third for native speakers among Romance languages, and is an official language of both the United Nations and European Union. It is the third most spoken language in the EU after English and German. It is an official language in 29 countries, most of which today comprise the international organization La Francophonie.
