Greek belongs to an independent branch of the Indo-European languages and is not closely related to any other living language. It is the official language in Greece and the Greek part of Cyprus. There are also Greek minorities in Albania, Italy and, earlier, Turkey. In total, more than 12 million people speak Greek as their first language and an estimated 5 million as a second language. However, the Greek diaspora is very significant and difficult to estimate. As one of the oldest cultural languages of humanity, Greek had a significant influence on the development of European languages. In its old form, it is the language of classical ancient Greek literature and the New Testament of the Christian Bible. Modern Greek is very different from the Greek of classical antiquity. It is written with its own letters, which the Greeks adopted and supplemented by the Phoenicians, the inventors of the alphabet. Typical for the Greek are the free word accent, accumulations of vowels and strong inflection. The langugae is therefore considered an elegant, but also very difficult to learn.
