Greek belongs to an independent branch of the Indo-European language family native to the southern Balkan Peninsula. It has the longest documented history of any Indo-European language, spanning 34 centuries. In its ancient form, it is the language of classical Ancient Greek literature and the New Testament of the Christian Bible. Its written form uses the Greek alphabet. The ancient languages which were probably most closely related to it, ancient Macedonian and Phrygian, are not well enough documented to permit a detailed comparison. Today, Greek seems to be most closely related to Armenian or the Indo-Iranian languages. Greek is the official language of Greece, where it is spoken by approximately 99.5% of the population. It is also one of the two official languages of Cyprus. Greek is also an official language of the European Union, in addition to being officially recognized as a minority language in parts of Turkey, Italy, Albania, Armenia and Ukraine. Greek is the mother tongue for about 15 million people, with an estimated 5 million speaking Greek as a second language, including members of Greek emigrant communities in many countries.
