Hungarian belongs to the Ugric branch of the Finno-Ugric language family and is the official language in Hungary. In addition, there are Hungarian minorities in neighbouring countries, notably in Romania and Slovakia, but also in Serbia, Ukraine and other neighboring countries. In total there are about 15 million native speakers. Hungarian is also an official language of the European Union, one of the official languages of Vojvodina (Serbia), parts of Slovenia, and in Romania in all settlements with an ethnic Hungarian population of over 20%. As part of the Finno-Ugric language family, it is exotic in Europe and only remotely related to Finnish or Estonian. Hungarian has a different grammar than most other European languages, as it is an agglutinative language. It is considered difficult to learn. Characteristic are also long words that are caused by this grammatical nature. In the vocabulary, only relatively few original words have survived, as many words were taken from Slavic and Turkic languages or translated from German.
