Kazakh is the official state language of Kazakhstan. There are 12 million Kazakh speakers worldwide (mainly ethnic Kazakhs), including an estimated 10 million in Kazakhstan itself and over 1 million in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. According to the 2002 census, Russia was also home to some 560,000 Kazakh speakers. Other sizable populations of Kazakh speakers live in Mongolia (less than 200,000), Uzbekistan and other Central Asian republics, the former USSR, Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkey. The Kazakh language is closely related to Kyrgyz. While Kazakh has historically been written using versions of the Latin, Cyrillic and Arabic scripts, it is currently written in the Cyrillic alphabet in Kazakhstan and Mongolia. In China, Kazakh is written employing an Arabic-derived script similar to that used to write Uyghur.
