Moldovan (also known as Moldavian) is one of the two names attributed to the Romanian language in the Republic of Moldova. As a matter of fact, Moldovan is essentially Romanian. However, for political reasons, the language is called both Moldovan and Romanian inside the country in support of the Moldovan-Romanian linguistic identity, as quoted from the preamble of the country’s 1989 Language Law. Moldavian speech refers to the north-eastern variety of spoken Romanian, which is encountered within the territory of the former Principality of Moldavia (now Moldova and Romania). The Moldavian variety is one of five major spoken varieties of Romanian, all five of which are written identically. The historical Romanian Cyrillic alphabet was used until 1857, while the Moldovan Cyrillic alphabet was used in 1940-89. At present, the latter continues to be used in the breakaway territory of Transnistria, while the Latin alphabet is adopted in the rest of the country.
