Romanian belongs to the Romance languages and is the only language of Latin origin in Eastern Europe. It is the official language in Romania and Moldova, where it is also known as Moldovan. About 25 million people speak it as their native language. Due to the insularity of Romanian in eastern Europe, many grammatical forms from Latin in Romanian have preserved and as the only Romance language, for example, it has three grammatical genders. Over time, Romanian has taken many words from languages of neighbouring countries, rulers or minorities that have lived in the country. Especially the Slavic languages, the Turkish, the Greek, the Hungarian and the German have decisively shaped the language. Later, many words were also formed on the French model. This linguistic wealth can lead to a word having several words that originate from different languages. The historical Romanian Cyrillic alphabet was used until 1857, while the Moldavian Cyrillic alphabet was used in 1940-89. At present, mainly the Latin alphabet is used.
