Portuguese is a Romance language that originated in Galicia and northern Portugal, and derived from the Latin spoken by the Pre-Roman peoples of the Iberian Peninsula around 2000 years ago. It spread worldwide, especially during the country’s main colonization period in the 15th and 16th centuries, as Portugal’s colonial and commercial empire grew. Today, Portuguese is one of the world's major languages, ranked 6th according to number of native speakers (between 191 and 230 million), including almost half the population of South America. Portuguese is also still a major lingua franca in Portugal's former colonies in Africa. It is an official language in nine countries including Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, and Angola. Apart from being used as a second language in a dozen or so other countries, most notably in the USA and Canada, there are over 20 creole languages based on Portuguese that are still spoken, especially in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.
