Punjabi or Panjabi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by inhabitants of the historical Punjab region (in Pakistan and India) and their diasporas. Today, the term ‘Punjabi language’ generally refers to ‘Eastern Punjabi’, a language based on the dialect found in the historical region of Majha, which includes seven districts spanning the Pakistani Province of Punjab and the Indian State of Punjab. Speakers of Punjabi mainly include adherents of the religions of Islam, Sikhism and Hinduism. Punjabi is the most spoken language in Pakistan and the 11th most widely spoken language in India. It is the 3rd most spoken language in South Asia and Punjabi’s status in South Asia and the world is indisputable, ranking 3rd and either 11th or 13th in the world in terms of the number of native language speakers, depending on which estimate you accept. Different sources estimate the native speakers of the Punjabi language at 57- 88 million. The most recent censes in Pakistan and India indicate approximately 63 million and 29 million Punjabi speakers in these countries, respectively. Despite the fact that the majority of Punjabi speakers live in Pakistan, where they form about half of the country's population, the language has no official status there.
