Romanian (also known as Daco-Romanian) is a Romance language, belonging to the Italic branch of the Indo-European language family. It is most similar to other Eastern Romance languages spoken south of the Danube and Italian, followed by other Western Romance languages such as French, Portuguese, and Spanish. It is sometimes called Daco-Romanian in reference to the area where it is spoken (corresponding roughly to the Roman province of Dacia). It is spoken by 24-28 million people, primarily in Romania and Moldova. Romanian is the single official and national language in Romania and Moldova, and shares official status at regional level in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina in Serbia and in the Moldovan autonomies of Gagauzia and Transnistria. Romanian minorities are encountered in Serbia, Ukraine, Hungary, and Bulgaria, with immigrant populations in Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Israel, Kazakhstan, Russia, the USA, Canada, and Australia. Romanian speakers account for 0.5% of the world's population, and 4% of the Romance-speaking population of the world.
