Tamil belongs to the southern branch of the Dravidian languages. There are an estimated 66 million native speakers worldwide, most of whom live in the Indian subcontinent. Tamil is the first language of the majorities in Tamil Nadu, India and North Eastern Province, Sri Lanka, and is also spoken by small groups of minorities in other parts of these two countries. There are currently sizeable Tamil-speaking populations, which descended from colonial-era migrants in Malaysia, Singapore, Burma, Réunion, Vietnam, South Africa, and Mauritius. While some people in Guyana, Fiji, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago have Tamil origins, only a small number speak the language there. Tamil is also spoken in emigrant communities around the world. It has official status in India, Sri Lanka and Singapore. It is the administrative language of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, and the first Indian language to be declared as a classical language by the Indian government in 2004. Tamil literature has existed for over two thousand years, with the earliest-found epigraphic records dating back to the third century BC and Tamil inscriptions in Egypt belonging to the 1st century BC. More than 55% (about 55,000) of the epigraphical inscriptions found by the Archaeological Survey of India are in the Tamil language.
