The Thai language belongs to the Tai group of the Kradai language family, a set of languages that are thought to have originated in the region now occupied by southern China. It is a tonal and analytic language that also has a complex orthography and relational markers. Thai is the national and official language of Thailand and the mother tongue of the Thai people, Thailand's dominant ethnic group. Standard Thai, also known as Central Thai or Siamese, is the official language of Thailand. It is spoken by an estimated 60-70 million people as both a native and second language, including speakers of Bangkok Thai. Khorat Thai is spoken by approximately 400,000 (according to a 1984 estimate) in Nakhon Ratchasima. A majority of the population residing in the Isan region of Thailand speak a dialect of the Lao language, which has influenced the Central Thai dialect. Thai is mutually intelligible with Lao. In addition to Standard Thai, Thailand is home to other related Tai languages: Isan, Nyaw, Galung, Lü, Northern Thai, Phuan, Phu Thai, Shan, Song, Southern Thai, and Thai Dam.
