Ukrainian is a language of the East Slavic subgroup of the Slavic languages. The Ukrainian language traces its origins to the Old Slavonic spoken in the early Medieval period, descending from the colloquial language used in the state of Kievan Rus (10th–13th century). In its earlier stages, it was known as Ruthenian. It shared official status as the state language, along with Russian, during the Soviet period, but has since become the exclusive state language of Ukraine following its independence. The language has persisted despite several periods of bans, repressions and general discouragement throughout the centuries, but still managed to maintain a sufficient base among the people of Ukraine and its folklore. Today, there are nearly 50 million ethnic Ukrainians worldwide, including 37.5 million in Ukraine, of whom an estimated 42-47 million actually speak Ukrainian. The language is prevalent in western Ukraine and in numerous rural pockets scattered throughout the country. The Ukrainian language employs the Cyrillic alphabet. The language has recently become popularized by Ukraine’s performances in the Eurovision song contest.
