Ukrainian is a language of the Eastern Slavic subgroup of Slavic languages. Since independence, it is the official language of Ukraine, although in the country, especially in the east and south, there is a large Russian population that does not speak Ukrainian. The relationship between these two languages remains a politically sensitive issue. There are about 35 million people who speak Ukrainian as their mother tongue, and more than 10 million people who speak or at least understand it as a second language. The Ukrainian language traces its origins to the Old Slavonic spoken in the early Medieval period, descending from the colloquial language used in the state of Kievan Rus. In its earlier stages, it was known as Ruthenian. Within the Slavic languages it represents a certain bridge between East and West Slavic, as it also contains several words from West Slavic languages, especially Polish. The Ukrainian language employs the Cyrillic alphabet.
